LendingClub is an independent decision platform, not a lender. The licensing question that matters for a credit offer is whether the actual provider is authorized for the product and state involved.
Verify the provider’s legal name
Do not rely on a marketing name alone. Match the legal name in the offer or agreement to official records and to the company that will fund or service the account.
Check official license records
Where licensing applies, use the appropriate state regulator and, when relevant, NMLS Consumer Access. Confirm that the record is active, the company name matches and the authority covers the product or activity you are considering.
Match the license to the state and role
A license for one state, product or activity does not automatically cover another. Funding, brokering, servicing and lead generation are different roles and may have different requirements.
Red flags
- The company name in the offer cannot be matched to an official record.
- The website or caller refuses to identify the legal provider.
- A person asks for an upfront payment by gift card, crypto or wire transfer to “release” a loan.2
- The stated address, phone number or license number belongs to another company.
Use our regulator guide
See State Loan Regulators & License Checks for a practical verification workflow.
Match the record to the actual offer
Keep the company name, activity, state, status and independently verified contact details together. Recheck the official record before relying on an old screenshot.
Follow the verification stepsFurther checks for this decision
Find the state regulator through the official directory and confirm current license-check instructions on the agency's website.1
Verify company contact details independently; an unexpected message may impersonate a real business.3
For an unresolved problem with an identified financial provider, check the CFPB's covered products and complaint instructions.4
