A score described as “fair” does not, by itself, tell you which loan you can obtain or what it will cost. A provider may use a different score model or report and consider income, existing obligations and other application information. 1
Use this page to prepare before applying. It does not assign approval odds, establish a minimum score or claim that LendingClub makes credit decisions.

What a 600, 620 or 650 score does not tell you
Those numbers are useful search starting points, but none establishes a national lending threshold. A score from an app can differ from the score used by a lender. The date and underlying report also matter.
Before comparing requirements, identify the source and model of the score you are viewing where possible. Do not assume moving a few points changes an outcome under a rule the provider has not published.
Separate a calculator from prequalification
A local repayment calculator uses assumptions and does not retrieve a credit report. A provider’s prequalification or rate-check process may request personal information and use a credit inquiry under its own terms.
A soft inquiry does not affect credit scores, while a hard inquiry can. Read which kind the provider uses and when it occurs. Do not assume every step labeled “check options” is a soft inquiry. 3
Do not assume personal-loan applications receive the same rate-shopping treatment as every other loan type. Ask about the actual inquiry before submitting multiple applications.
Build a checklist with answers, not guesses
| Question | Evidence to look for |
|---|---|
| Does the provider serve my state? | Current product and state information |
| Is the needed amount supported? | Actual minimum and maximum, not a calculator slider |
| What income evidence is accepted? | The provider’s documentation instructions |
| Which inquiry occurs and when? | A clear disclosure before authorization |
| What charges reduce proceeds? | Fee and funding disclosures |
| Who receives my information? | Operator and recipient disclosures |
Mark unanswered questions as “not confirmed.” An incomplete checklist does not establish eligibility or approval.
Compare the cost of an actual offer
If an offer is available, compare the APR, contract interest rate, fees, proceeds, payment and total repayment. A smaller monthly payment can hide a longer schedule. A deducted origination fee can leave less money for the expense. 2
For example, a $5,000 balance with a hypothetical 5% withheld fee produces $4,750 in cash. That arithmetic applies regardless of the label attached to a credit profile; it does not predict what fee a fair-credit applicant would receive.

Joint applications and collateral change the decision
A co-borrower, co-signer or secured product can involve another person’s obligation or an asset at risk. These are not interchangeable ways to improve an approval score. Confirm whether the actual product supports the arrangement, who is liable and what happens if repayment fails.
No joint, co-signed or secured loan is represented as available through this page. Do not add another person’s information without their involvement and valid authorization.
Check reports for errors before repeating requests
Review the credit information available to you and investigate information you believe is inaccurate through the relevant reporting or creditor channels. Checking your own report is a soft inquiry. 3
Correcting an error is different from paying someone to guarantee approval or erase accurate negative history. A more accurate report still does not guarantee a particular loan outcome.
If the provider declines the request
Read the notice and any stated reasons or next steps. Do not assume the solution is an immediate larger request or a high-cost product. Compare the bill deadline, a smaller genuine gap, creditor arrangements and other available support.
If the provider gives a contact or review process, use that actual channel. A different site cannot overturn another lender’s decision merely because it uses a similar brand name.
Fair-credit questions
Can I get a personal loan with a 600 score? The score alone cannot answer that. The provider’s model, requirements and full application matter; no acceptance is promised here.
Is 620 better than 600 for every lender? This page cannot infer thresholds or pricing rules that are not published. Compare the actual criteria rather than assigning an approval percentage.
Does 650 guarantee a lower rate? No. Loan pricing can depend on more than the displayed score, and the offer must be verified.
Will checking this calculator hurt my credit? No credit report is retrieved by the local calculation. A later provider process must state its own inquiry policy.
Should I use the highest amount shown? Start with the actual cash gap and repayment. A $35,000 planning ceiling is not a suitable or eligible amount for every borrower.
Separate checking from applying
Ask whether the current step uses a soft or hard inquiry, and whether a later full application changes that. Do not send repeated requests merely to test an approval guess.
Compare the terms you actually receiveFurther checks for this decision
A promise of guaranteed credit in exchange for an upfront payment is a warning sign. Verify the provider and distinguish a disclosed loan charge from a payment demanded to guarantee approval.4
Some federal credit unions offer Payday Alternative Loans. Membership, eligibility and availability still need checking with the specific credit union.5
